Femme Wave’s film program returns, following a successful launch last year. In 2015, we were proud to host a panel discussion with female writers, directors and producers, followed by a showcase of talented Canadian female filmmakers.

This year, we’re thrilled to screen Black Magic, a documentary about young women killing it at Double Dutch!

Black Magic, 1984 (Dir. David Hoffman, 52 minutes)

Black Magic follows an American all-female jump rope team that wins a trip to England, where they’ll attempt to beat their own world record.

Their enthusiasm, drive and pluck is more than infectious. What’s more, the topics addressed in the film – from the role of the sport in young people’s lives to these ladies relating to their English peers – still resonate today. It’s a touching look at a group of young women that will stick with you for some time. We’re thrilled to screen the film version of this documentary, with the help of the Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers. Again, we’ll be showcasing the work of talented female filmmakers in a shorts package prior to the feature.

Also included are two short films:

SWEET NIGHT
Dir. Jessie Short
6:53 min., Canada, 2016

Andy is a young Métis woman living in a big city. When a friend invites Andy to accompany her to a large city park where she introduces Andy to sweet grass, it sparks a night of interpersonal exploration and self-discovery, ultimately reconnecting Andy with her Indigenous roots.

FAMILY PHOTO
Dir. Gillian McKercher
6:20 min., Canada, 2016

Family Photo is a snapshot of Sunday dinner Chinese-Canadian style. Seen through the eyes of ten-year-old Brianna, “Family Photo” presents the mini triumphs, frustrations, and interactions that define everyday life. At once nostalgic and modern, Family Photo shows that the extraordinary can live inside the ordinary.
