Neither Straight Nor Flat: Studio D on the Prairies

Rebecca Sullivan, Curator

From 1974-1996, the National Film Board of Canada’s Women’s Unit (Studio D) produced over one hundred films chronicling the most urgent issues of global gender equity. While headquartered in Montreal, Studio D strongly supported regional filmmakers and sought to express the diverse cultures of women across the country. This 30-minute program of clips from Studio D films depicting Prairie life and women’s unique concerns presents an original perspective from some of our leading feminist filmmakers, including Michelle Wong, Barbara Evans, and many others.

Dr. Rebecca Sullivan is a professor at the University of Calgary. She currently holds a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Grant for “The Legacy of Studio D for Canadian Feminist Media Arts Activism.”
